Jan 31, 9:25 AM (ET) NEW DELHI (AP) - India's lucrative outsourcing industry struggled Thursday to overcome Internet slowdowns and outages after cuts in two undersea cables sliced the country's bandwidth in half. The disruption - which has hit a swath of users from Egypt to Bangladesh - began to affect much of the Middle East on Wednesday, when outages caused a slowdown in traffic on Dubai's stock exchange. Such large-scale disruptions are rare but not unknown. East Asia suffered nearly two months of outages and slow service after an earthquake damaged undersea cables near Taiwan in December 2006. Under-reported: Scandal in China Over Tainted Cancer Drugs
BEIJING — A huge state-owned Chinese pharmaceutical company that exports to dozens of countries, including the United States, is at the center of a nationwide drug scandal after nearly 200 Chinese cancer patients were paralyzed or otherwise harmed last summer by contaminated leukemia drugs.
Chinese drug regulators have accused the manufacturer of the tainted drugs of a cover-up and have closed the factory that produced them. In December, China’s Food and Drug Administration said that the Shanghai police had begun a criminal investigation and that two officials, including the head of the plant, had been detained.
The drug maker, Shanghai Hualian, is the sole supplier to the United States of the abortion pill, mifepristone, known as RU-486. It is made at a different factory than the one that produced the tainted cancer drugs, about an hour’s drive away

Edwards quits presidential race
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- Former Sen. John Edwards dropped out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination on Wednesday"It is time for me to step aside so that history can blaze its path," Edwards said in New Orleans, the same city where he first declared his run for the 2008 Democratic presidential race.
With his wife, Elizabeth, and children at his side, Edwards said he couldn't predict "who will take the final steps to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.," but he said it would be a Democrat.
"We must do better if we want to live up to the promise of this country we love so much," he said.
Earlier, an Edwards aide said the candidate was not getting the media attention he needed to get his message out and win delegates, especially with races coming up in 22 states next Tuesday.
Edwards has amassed 26 delegates for the Democratic nomination.

Cheney most recently worked in the State Department handling Middle East affairs.
While her father and President George W. Bush have both vowed to remain neutral as their fellow Republicans battle it out for the party's presidential nomination, the endorsement is likely to be well received among conservatives who comprise a critical primary voting bloc in both Florida, which votes Tuesday, and the 22 states voting Feb. 5.
Romney has also enjoyed the support of aides with ties to the Bush family, including top assistants to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and former President George H.W. Bush

NAIROBI, Kenya (CNN) -- Tribal fighting once again engulfed Kenya's western Rift Valley Sunday as members of President Mwai Kibaki's Kikuyu tribe attacked other ethnic groups.
The violence was centered around the Rift Valley towns of Naivasha and Nakuru.
According to an opposition party member, tribal fighting has killed at least 47 people since Thursday in Nakuru, one of the places just visited by former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan.

On Sunday the violence spread to the town of Naivasha, around 50 kilometers (30 miles) southeast of Nakuru, with gangs of Kikuyu erecting makeshift roadblocks and reports of people being burned alive in their homes.
A Red Cross official said anywhere between 20 and 30 are believed to have been killed in the Rift Valley town, although the official stressed that the figure had not yet been verified by police.
The official said the agency had received reports of a non-Kikuyu family burned to death in their house.

What is running through my head?
The fact that for the third week I've had problems with my Los Angeles Times being delivered. One week, I have no idea. Second week on the wrong porch and opened.
I hope our regular delivery person is on vacation. If not it seems I have to wake up to meet this delivery person and let them know to look at the addresses. Simple step - huge difference

Suharto, Former Indonesian Dictator, Dies at 86
Checked out The New York Times this morning to read this:
whose 32-year dictatorship was one of the most brutal and corrupt of the 20th century, died Sunday in Jakarta. He was 86.
Mr. Suharto had been hospitalized on Jan. 4 with heart, lung and kidney problems, according to medical officials of Pertamina Hospital in Jakarta. His condition worsened dramatically over the weekend and he lost consciousness and stopped breathing on his own, they said.
A statement issued by the chief presidential doctor, Marjo Subiandono, said he was declared dead at 1:10 p.m. The cause of death was given as multi-organ failure.

Report: Congo conflict claims 5 million lives
The two sides have been attending a conference for more than two weeks in the eastern city of Goma and late Tuesday, they appeared close to signing an agreement. Their discussions are focusing on peace for the country's eastern Kivu provinces.
Humanitarian group, the International Rescue Committee, released a report Wednesday saying that conflict and humanitarian crisis in Congo have taken the lives of some 5.4 million people since 1998, and that 45,000 people continue to die there every month.
IRC President George Rupp said the loss of life was equivalent to the entire population of Denmark, or the state of Colorado, dying within a decade.
Even with the country's violence, the IRC found that most of the deaths were from non-violent causes like malaria, diarrhea, pneumonia, and malnutrition.
Nearly half the deaths were among children younger than 5, even though they are only 19 percent of the population, the IRC said.

Why am I NOT surprised Andy Roddick is ...
out of the Australian Open. To be honest I'm actually surprised he made it this far. I think we have a lot of talented young men players in the United States and I truly hope that they will get more opportunity and press in the future. Meanwhile, once again, Andy Roddick is done and NOT a contender. Man can NOT win by ACES alone (neither can women)

ANDY Roddick limped out of Melbourne yesterday, stung by an Australian Open humbling and no closer to a second grand slam title.
Hopeful of Melbourne Park success after Davis Cup victory and a third consecutive AAMI Classic triumph, Roddick made his earliest Open exit in six seasons.
Frazzled and frustrated, Roddick was yesterday fined $570 for racquet abuse after a five-set loss to German Philipp Kohlschreiber.
And he was fortunate to escape being penalised for sledging umpire Emmanuel Joseph, Kohlschreiber and the German's support group during a traumatic defeat.
Roddick hit a career-high 42 aces and three double faults in a magnificent serving display, but still lost. Almost 80 winners flowed from his racquet, but they were innocuous in the face of Kohlschreiber's superior consistency.

Under-reported News: Alabama man confessing to killing his 4 children

Here is a bit of what is happening while much of the news is talking about Britney Spears carrying on with a married man:
MOBILE, Alabama (Reuters) - An Alabama father confessed to throwing his four young children from a high-rise bridge into coastal waters after an argument with his wife, police said on Wednesday.
Lam Luong, 37, of Irvington, Alabama, was charged with four counts of murder and was being held in the Mobile County, Alabama, jail. He was scheduled for a bond hearing on Thursday.
Searchers in boats and helicopters were scouring 100 square miles of coastal Alabama waterways for the children, who ranged in age from four months to three years and were presumed dead.
Investigators said Luong first reported the children missing on Monday but later admitted he threw them from the 80-foot (24-metre) bridge connecting the Alabama mainland to Dauphin Island near Mobile following a dispute with his wife.

So the Primaries are today
Do you know what a delegate is. Here is a pretty good explanation from Wikipedia. I saw a great breakdown on CNN but have to find the link again
A delegate is a member of a group representing an organization (e.g. a government, a charity, an NGO, or a trade union) at a meeting or conference between organisations of the same level (e.g. trade talks or an environmental summit between governments; an arbitration over an industrial dispute; or a meeting of student unions from individual colleges at a national student union conference).
Delegates from the major political parties are involved in the selection of candidates for President of the United States by such assemblies as a convention. Some of the officials involved in the process are called superdelegates.
I'm really interested to see how today's primaries turn out. I've been a bit disappointed at some of the comments/quotes attributed to Bill Clinton recently. I am hoping that he was misquoted but I doubt it.

In U.S. politics and government, caucus has several distinct but interrelated meanings.
One is for a meeting of members of a political party or subgroup to coordinate members' actions, choose group policy, or nominate candidates for various offices.
The term is frequently used to discuss the caucuses used by some states to select presidential nominees, such as the Iowa caucuses. Along these same lines, in early American history, the Congressional nominating caucus and legislative caucus were influential meetings of congressmen to decide the party's nominee for President and party platforms. Similar caucuses were held by the parties at state level.

If You Street Race or Drive Unde the Influence - YOU ARE AN IDIOT
You know there are two things I realize I have absolutely no patience for - Drunk Driving and Street Racing. It seems lately each morning I wake up to news that some innocent person has had their life taken away from them or changed forever due to the immature, irresponsible and idiotic actions of some moron who is behind the wheel.
Recently in Hollywood, one person died when their car was hit by one of these morons. They died in the resulting fire. Can you imagine how horrible that is? And sorry, does not cut it. These persons knew they were taking a chance but just don't seem to think of others.
Here are just a very few of the stories that made the news. My prayers go out to the families and friends of the innocent victims.
