President Bush is congratulating Sen. Barack Obama on his victory yesterday in the Democratic presidential primary, White House press secretary Dana Perino told reporters this morning at the off-camera briefing known as the "gaggle."

"Senator Obama came a long way in becoming his party's nominee. And his historic achievement reflects the fact that our country has come along way, too," Perino says, according to the Associated Press.

Update at 10:09 a.m. ET: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice tells the AP that Obama's success represents an "extraordinary" development for the nation.
