US Supreme Court rules on Gun Ban

I've found myself being fascinated with recent court rulings. Some I agree with, some I disagree with but learning about the law is always interesting. Via Times Online this ruling concerning Gun Ownership came down today. Any opinions? Click link for entire article. Here is a bit:

US Supreme Court strikes down Washington DC's gun ban

The Supreme Court today declared for the first time that the US constitution grants individual citizens the right to possess firearms, a ruling which threatens to unpick much of America’s patchwork gun control laws.

By striking down Washington DC’s 32-year-old ban on handguns - one of the most restrictive pieces of legislation anywhere in America - the court has opened up to legal challenge similar laws elsewhere in the country.

The case hung on the interpretation of the Second Amendment which states: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

In more than 200 years since the amendment’s ratification, the Supreme Court has never before ruled decisively on the subject. Lower courts have usually interpreted the Second Amendment as a right tied to service in a state militia such as the National Guard.
